How to turn money moments into loving moments
It’s the warm loving moments we share with those closest to us that make life feel so good, and we all want more of those! We all also have money moments with those we love… but if we can turn these in into loving moments too, it could make all the difference as we celebrate this month of love this February.
There are many different money moments, but they all impact your relationships. In fact, money is the most common cause of relationship stress and, sadly, money issues are among the top causes of divorce. Fortunately, there are many ways to turn money moments into loving moments, and your financial coach* can provide excellent advice to best handle your specific money moments with those you love.

Here are some of the money moments colleagues have shared with us:
Lerato** says: “My son so much wanted a very expensive gift for his 16th birthday, but I just could not afford it. I felt so bad, but my financial coach suggested it was an opportunity to share a money moment that will make a big positive difference in his financial future: learning together to save up for things we want. My coach also helped me so I could explain it to my son and gave us a saving plan to follow. Today, I am so happy my son has the gift he wanted so much, and that he experienced an important lesson about saving.”
“I had gotten into a significant amount of short-term debt, but my wife had no idea how deep in debt we were,” says Thabo**. “It was a terrible secret to keep, and I was feeling highly stressed and anxious. It really affected our relationship. The only person I could talk to in complete confidence was my financial coach, who helped me get to grips with my financial situation and coached me so I would be able to tell my wife the truth. This made a big improvement in our relationship; we now manage our finances together and working as a team.”
In these, and in many other money moments we have with our loved ones, there is an opportunity to turn it into a loving moment too – here are three ways to do it…
Get help! - Handling money moments is not easy, and turning these into loving moments can be difficult, but you can always reach out to your financial coach* for great advice and a helping hand.
Have a money conversation - Be honest and open with your loved ones when it comes to money, your beliefs about it and how your money matters can be improved.
Do it together! - Co-operate with your loved ones to draw up a budget, have regular money meetings, make decisions together and learn together.
Communicating honestly and respectfully and working together to achieve common financial goals will ensure those sometimes-difficult money moments can be turned into loving moments that make your relationships even stronger.
